Breeding and The AKSC, Inc.

 

The AKSC Breeding Committee overseas all breedings of King Shepherds.  All breeding pairs must apply and be approved by the AKSC Breeding Committee and health checks and temperamnet tests must be completed and documented, prior to any breeding taking place.

 

Among the health checks that the AKSC screens for are:

* Hips

* Elbows

* Eye CERF

* Heart

 

The AKSC Ethical Guide for breeders below is used as an outline for not only the breeders of King Shepherds, but also outlines the responsibilities of members, stud dog owners and sellers.

The King Shepherd is a wonderful breed, which should be bred to preserve all of their endearing qualities.  Ultimately the responsibility for good breeding practices lies with the breeder.

 

I. Responsibilities of Members

A. To provide for all dogs in their keeping

1. Physical Requirements of

a. Appropriate food, water, and shelter.

b. Protection from bodily harm.

c. Proper health care, including sanitation, immunization, and veterinary attention as needed.

2. Emotional requirements of

a. Attention and affection.

b. Appropriate training as needed.

B. To abide by AKSC rules applicable to activities in which they engage.

C. To refuse to sell King Shepherds to any pet shop, or any wholesale dealer in dogs, or knowingly to sell or aid or abet the sale of any King Shepherd to a person or agent who will sell the animal through a pet shop.

 

 

II. Responsibilities of Breeders

A. To be familiar with the Standard and to be aware that the purpose of breeding is to maintain or improve the quality of the King Shepherd in accordance with the Standard.

B. To be familiar with the AKSC rules applicable to litter registration and individual registration.

C. To use for breeding only mature bitches in good health. It is recommended to skip a heat period between breedings of the bitch.

D. To represent accurately the health history and breeding records of the bitch when negotiating for stud service and to select only those studs who conform to the AKSC standard of the breed.

E. To breed healthy King Shepherds bitches, who are of sound conformation, temperament and free of genetic disorders.  It is advised that all breeding stock should be screened for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye cerf and heart prior to being bred.  Additionally it is advised that all breeding stock be certified of sound temperament by obtaining a TDI, CGC, TT, or equivalent temperaemnt certification. 

F. To negotiate all terms of a breeding agreement prior to breeding. A written contract is recommended.

G. To produce puppies only when he/she has the time, facilities, and resources to provide attention to proper physical and emotional development.

H. For breeders to look for an experienced mentor when breeding their dogs, as well as a good veterinarian, if questions should arise.

I. Outcross breedings to produce registerable King Shepherd litters will only be admissible as a true King Shepherd breeding, if the officers of the American King Shepherd Club give prior permission by way of a majority vote.

J. No King Shepherd bitch will be allowed for an outcross breeding, where the resultant litter is not a King Shepherd litter or is to be registered and classified as a different breed of dog.  (i.e. using a King female to breed with a Shiloh Shepherd male, where the resultant litter will be registered as Shiloh Shepherds.).  Violation of this rule can be grounds for the revocation of said dog’s AKSC registration papers, the revocation of any offspring’s AKSC registration papers and the expulsion of said dog’s owners, including all rights and privileges, from the AKSC.

K. It is recommended that breeders use their Kennel names when placing their puppies into their new homes.  However, once a King Shepherd is registered with an AKSC name, regardless if the breeder’s kennel name is used or not used, it cannot be changed without permission from the breeder.  Violation of this rule can be grounds for the revocation of said dog’s AKSC registration papers, the revocation of any offspring’s AKSC registration papers and the expulsion of said dog’s owners, including all rights and privileges, from the AKSC.

III. Responsibilities of the Stud Dog Owner

A. To be familiar with the Standard and to be aware that the purpose of breeding is to maintain or improve the quality of the King Shepherd in accordance with the Standard.

B. To be familiar with the AKSC rules applicable to litter registration.

C. To accept for servicing only bitches who appear to be in good health and who conform to the AKSC standard of the breed.

D. To represent accurately the health history and breeding records of the dog.

E. To breed healthy King Shepherds studs, who are of sound conformation, temperament and free of genetic disorders.  It is advised that all breeding stock should be screened for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye CERF and heart cleared prior to being bred. 

F. To negotiate all terms of a breeding agreement prior to breeding. A written contract is recommended.

G. Outcross breedings to produce registerable King Shepherd litters will only be admissible as a true King Shepherd breeding, if the officers of the American King Shepherd Club give prior permission by way of a majority vote.

IV. Responsibilities of Sellers

A. To ascertain that the prospective buyer is aware of the needs of a King Shepherd and has the knowledge and facilities to care properly for a growing or grown dog.

B. To transfer registration papers to the buyer at the time of sale.

C. To advise a buyer, or prospective buyer, of any probable delay or difficulty in registration.

D. To provide the buyer with a written Bill of Sale to include a description of the dog, the whelping date, the name of sire and dam, and the litter or individual registration number if available.

E. To advise the buyer of any known health defects.

F. To advise the buyer in writing of any or all health guarantees and compensations offered by the seller.

G. Be willing to take back the King Shepherd at any age, if it is found that the King is unsuitable for the owner, or if the King is in unsuitable circumstances.

H. To make themselves accessible in the future, for any questions or concerns that the new owner may have dealing with their King Shepherd.

V. Advertising

It should be borne in mind that advertising may be read by persons having little or no knowledge of dogs. Each member is responsible to see that all advertising in his/her name does not promote his/her King Shepherds through misleading or exaggerated statements or distortion of fact, or through stated or implied deprecation of the King Shepherd of others.

 

 

VI. Contracts

Written contracts are strongly recommended for all transactions such as sales, co-ownerships, breeding rights agreements, compensation for future puppies, leasing a bitch and stud services.

 

 

VII. Discipline

The following are prima facie grounds for disciplinary action.

A. Neglect or abuse of any King Shepherd in the care of a member documented by the affidavits of three witnesses or by investigation of an authorized humane organization.

B. Suspension of privileges by the AKSC for violation of its rules.

C. Advertising found to be in violation of the Code of Ethics.

D. Knowingly to sell, or to aid and abet the sale of a King Shepherd to or through a pet shop or its agents.

E. Refusal to comply with the terms of a written contract involving a King Shepherd without showing just cause.

F. Refusal to complete the chain of AKSC registration without showing just cause.

G. Refusal to transfer registration papers to a buyer without showing just cause.

H. Refusal to honor guarantees and agreements made in writing without showing just cause.

I. The use of a  King Shepherd bitch or stud for an outcross breeding, where the resultant litter is to be registered and classified as a different breed of dog.  (i.e. using a King male to breed to a Shiloh Shepherd female, where the resultant litter will be registered as Shiloh Shepherds.)  Violation of this rule can be grounds for the revocation of said dog’s AKSC registration papers, the revocation of any offspring’s AKSC registration papers and the expulsion of said dog’s owners, including all rights and privileges, from the AKSC.

J.  Owners who change the name of their AKSC registered King Shepherd without the permission or consent of the said dog’s breeder. Violation of this rule can be grounds for the revocation of said dog’s AKSC registration papers, the revocation of any offspring’s AKSC registration papers and the expulsion of said dog’s owners, including all rights and privileges, from the AKSC.

 

VIII. Enforcement

Enforcement of the disciplinary section of the Code of Ethics will be handled in accordance with the disciplinary procedures outlined in of the By-Laws and Constitution, and/or by way of the terms that are stated in this AKSC Ethical Guide for Breeders. In the case of any business transaction involving King Shepherds, the AKSC will refuse to entertain any grievance brought against a member unless a written contract or other document signed by both parties is submitted with the grievance.
